Multifaceted

A semi-autonomous video installation exploring the emotional and psychological weight of imposter syndrome

2022 | Video Art | Mixed Media

About the Work

"Multifaceted" is a semi-autonomous video that explores the emotional and psychological weight of imposter syndrome. This internal struggle creates a persistent fear of being exposed as inadequate, often leading to memory loss, delusions, and depression.

Moments of loneliness, confusion, and discomfort emerge, accompanied by an unspoken longing to be seen and rescued. To capture this experience, I combined a voice-over narrative with layered, distorted video effects, visually mirroring the disorientation and self-doubt that define imposter syndrome.

Through this piece, I aim to depict the complexity of this condition and the unseen battles that come with it.

Artistic Statement

This work examines the internal experience of imposter syndrome—a psychological pattern where individuals doubt their accomplishments and fear being exposed as a "fraud."

Through distorted visuals and fragmented narratives, the video mirrors the cognitive dissonance and emotional turmoil that accompany this condition. The layered effects represent the multiple facades one maintains while struggling with self-doubt.

The piece invites viewers to confront the invisible burden of feeling inadequate despite evidence of success, creating a space for recognition and empathy.

Reflections

Creating "Multifaceted" was both a cathartic and challenging process. It required me to confront my own experiences with imposter syndrome and translate those internal struggles into a visual language that others could connect with.

The technical approach of layering video effects and distorting imagery was intentional—each layer represents another mask, another version of oneself presented to the world. The voice-over adds an intimate, confessional quality that contrasts with the visual chaos.

This work is part of my ongoing exploration of mental health, identity, and the ways we perform versions of ourselves. I hope it resonates with viewers who have experienced similar feelings of inadequacy and serves as a reminder that these struggles are more common than we think.
